The city of Detroit and the Chrysler brand have a long standing partnership, and the automaker is committed to giving back to the city that has made it grow to where it stands today. The company's latest endeavor to help the local community is a program that encourages Detroit youth to fall in love with reading.
Chrysler has partnered up with the United Way and Scholastic to distribute nearly 150,000 books at events around the greater metropolitan area. These gatherings, called "Meet Up and Eat Up," function as a way to promote early education and reading, but also ensure that kids get at least one good meal that day. This is a growing concern when summer rolls around, as kids don't have access to cafeterias and school lunch programs.
According to a recent Scholastic study, kids who have access to a sizable at-home library are more likely to become avid readers and develop a lifelong affinity for books, school, and knowledge in general. This isn't tied to household income, and by providing these kids with reading material and other resources, they can do better in school and other areas, too.
